This 1-hour education session will teach counselors about a form of human trafficking known as Trokosi. A number of refugees and immigrants in our region have escaped from trokosi, which is considered a religious practice. Counselors need to understand how to identify someone who has escaped from trokosi and how to provide culturally appropriate services. The session will also include resources counselors can use to help clients who have personally experienced trokosi or have family members who have experienced it.
Victoria Baah-Binney is a Licensed Professional Counselor and is currently enrolled in the Counselor Educator and Supervisor doctoral program at the University of Cincinnati. She is actively conducting research on Trokosi, African Refugees youth and Human Trafficking. She has worked with community leaders in Ghana connected with the practice of Trokosi. She is also working with support efforts in the Dayton and Indianapolis regions that support survivors of Trokosi.
